Varisty Football, Varsity Football · VNN-GA GOW – Game Preview

This week’s VNN-GA Game of the Week has the Ola Mustangs traveling to take on the Jones County Greyhounds in a region 4-AAAAA showdown tonight at 7:30pm  – Jones County HS stadium. Ola is led by 1st year Coach Jared Zito. He will lead his undefeated team into this battle for first place in region 4-AAAAA. The Mustangs are 6-0 overall, 3-0 in region, coming off a 38-28 victory last week over Union Grove. The Greyhounds are led by Head Coach Mike Chastain who is in his 2nd year as the Jones County head man. The Greyhounds are also 3-0 in region play (3-3 overall) and fresh off last weeks impressive 51-8 take down of Locust Grove. With a beautifully renovated Jones County Stadium playing host, some crisp in the air and first place at stake this has big time GA high school football written all over it!

I recently had a Q&A with Coach Zito discussing the season to date & tonight’s game. Unfortunately I was unable to connect with Coach Chastain.

What is your biggest area(s) of concern at this point of the season?
Coach Zito – Just trying to keep Improving each week. Hope our team stays humble and hungry. This is new territory for us. Learning to deal with early success is our new challenge.
What has been your team’s strengths that have come to light during your season to date?
Coach Zito – Overall team play. Lots of players contributing each week. A balanced team in all 3 phases so far. We are not relying on one player to make a play on either side of the ball. Everyone is just doing their job for the most part.
Has anyone or anything stood out as the most surprising or unexpected positive during the first part of the season?
Coach Zito – Most would say our JR QB Jake Hall. He started for us the last 2 years at Strong Safety – no spring or real summer to get him ready but he has command of our offense.
Any thoughts on how COVID as impacted the season to date – good or bad or in general?
Coach Zito – We have had a few minor bumps in the road but nothing severe so far where we had to miss a game. We have a good job so far of staying healthy and safe but each day and week could present an issue with so many unknowns.
Any final thoughts on the game, the season? or anything you would like added to the article?
Coach Zito – Jones is a great team and program with a winning tradition. We believe it is going to be a great atmosphere. This going to be a great challenge for us and I am excited to see how we respond.
Looking forward to seeing everyone tonight. I will be posting photo galleries on both websites in the next coming days. Thanks!!
